Ausservillgraten is located in the southern part of East Tyrol, directly on the border with neighbouring South Tyrol and is therefore a strategically good starting point for excursions in East Tyrol and South Tyrol. But already from the beginning of the hiking tourism in the 20th century the 3 Peaks became a popular destination for excursions and since then they have not lost any of their fascination. The striking mountain massif in the Sesto Dolomites is located on the border with the Italian province of Belluno and is a magical attraction for hikers, climbers and ski touring enthusiasts. The most comfortable way to circumnavigate the 3 Peaks is to take the public bus or your own car to the Auronzo Hut at 2,320m above sea level, i.e. to the foot of the 3 Peaks. From there, the hiking tour is quite easy and can be done by everybody.

Oberstaller Alm

The Oberstaller Alm is an impressive, listed alpine village with 18 sunburned and historic alpine huts and a chapel. Mentioned for the first time in 1675, the alpine huts are now a popular and easily accessible destination. Starting point for the short hike is the Unterstaller Alm in the rear Villgratental valley. The newly built viewing platform Klapfbachwasserfall, combined with a circular hike, can also be reached on foot from the snack station Unterstaller Alm in about 10 minutes. From the viewing platform you have a wonderful view of the highest mountains in the region, the Ober- and Unterstaller Alm as well as the Kamelisen Alm and the Villgrater mountains.

Olperls Mountain World at the Monte Elmo

Olperls Bergwelt is a newly built adventure park on the Monte Elmo and starts directly at the top station of the Monte Elmo cable cars. A very beautifully laid out barefoot hiking trail leads to Olperls best friends – into the realm of alpine wildlife. On the highest barefoot path in the Dolomites (2,150m), nature can be wonderfully touched. Soft moss, fragrant larch wood, stone slabs or pebbles enliven the foot reflex zones and cool spring water has a refreshing effect. In addition, you can discover 10 exciting adventure points on the 1.5 km long circular hiking trail – with great views of the summit world of the Sesto Dolomites. The entrance is free of charge!

Family Mountain Haunold
San Candido | South Tyrol
The Haunold is the local mountain of San Candido and a popular excursion destination for families. A four-seater chairlift, which is about 3 minutes from the centre of San Candido, takes you up to an altitude of 1.500m. There you will find an excellent playground for young and old with great attractions in an impressive landscape. One of these attractions is the Fun Bob Haunold, the longest summer toboggan run in South Tyrol. Here you have the possibility to glide with a bobsleigh over aluminium rails back down to the valley at high speed. At the Riese Haunold hut there is also an alpine recreation area with the so-called footprint lakes, where you can really let your soul dangle. One of the latest attractions is the dwarf village. High up in the branches, quaint tree houses float, which you can explore over ladders and suspension bridges. The dwarf life takes place in the nine forest huts below. So fun for the whole family is guaranteed at the Haunold.

The high ropes course adventure park invites the whole family to an exciting journey of discovery in the natural forest. Eight different courses of varying degrees of difficulty lead in heights of 1.5 to 8 metres. 65 elements and stations with 12 Flying Fox on a total length of 850m require climbing, balancing, sliding and dumb-bells over a wide variety of rope and bridge constructions.

Wildlife Park Gustav Mahler

Beastly good – that’s an excellent description of the Gustav Mahler Game Park in the little hamlet of Altschluderbach. At any time of the year, the lovingly managed animal park in Dobbiaco attracts visitors with two- and four-legged attractions, which make the eyes of curious children in particular shine. A very spacious enclosure offers animals such as roe deer, raccoons, lynxes and deer a home here in species-appropriate keeping. Mouflons, buzzards, domestic pigs and pheasants can also be found in the wildlife park. The park is named after the famous Austrian composer Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), who spent his summer holidays in Dobbiaco. The famous composer’s cottage of Gustav Mahler is located in the wildlife park and can also be visited.

Children’s Mile Golzentipp

On Golzentipp, Obertilliach’s local mountain, you will find the Children’s Mile in summer, consisting of eight stations along the hiking trail suitable for prams from the top station of the Golzentipp cable car to the Jochsee lake. There is plenty of variety here. Via the “Stair Mile”, at the end of which children can test their long jump suitability, you reach the station where all senses are perceived. There is also the possibility to practice “climbing” on logs and over stones. A highlight for the whole family is the panoramic spot at the reservoir for “relaxing”. At another station there is a labyrinth, in which a strongly distorted reflection of the “strays” makes for some laughs. After passing the top station of the Glamplift, the almost flat final passage to the Jochsee follows. The Children’s Mile at Golzentipp is therefore a highly recommended excursion tip for the whole family.

The Osttirodler is a spectacular Alpine Coaster in the Dolomite city of Lienz. For a total of 2.7 km you can ride from the Moosalm over the Lienzer Schlossberg directly to the finish of the Hochstein Arena. The East Tyrolean promises adrenalin PUR, even for “real men”, if you let it go in the countless steep turns and jumps, waves and three spinning tops. You can fully enjoy the rapid ride, because it can take 4.5 to 6.7 minutes depending on the chosen speed. The Osttirodler is one of the longest and most spectacular alpine coasters in the world, but it is still extremely safe, as absolutely nothing can happen due to the double track system and the built-in top speed control. You can sit alone or as a couple in a comfortable sled.
